It’s too bad that memorizing the multiplication tables is out of fashion. Kids simply can’t do math fast enough if they have to complicate it by first solving the simple multiplication in the math expression before they actually start working out the problem! With the multiplication facts firmly in their memory banks, kids can focus on the problem at hand, not the basic math facts.
Can you imagine your fourth grader looking at a problem like
(4+6) – 3 =
and not knowing without thinking that 4+6 = 10?
She should be able to look at
(4 x 6) -3 =
the same way, and just know that 4 x 6 = 24!
