I put a new free printable resource in my Teachers Pay Teachers store:
If you’re like me, you’re unaware of National Donut Day until around noon on National Donut Day, when you finally figure out why everyone is posting pictures of donuts.
These “national holidays” are silly, but they’re still more fun for my kids than I’d think, so if I notice one, I try to scrabble together a quick mini celebration. Like this: How to Celebrate Chinese New Year with Kid! Last Minute Mom
We just add “observed” when a silly holiday has come and gone but we want to eat sugar. National Root Beer Float Day, Observed was a hit.
Here’s a super quick idea to celebrate Roald Dahl day (or Roald Dahl Month, if you’re just aiming for any day you remember to deal with this in September). In under 3 minutes, you can both acknowledge Roald Dahl (author of Matilda) and point out a troubling issue in American culture…but in a sort of fun way.

Roald Dahl Month is September. Really?
I’m not a huge fan of Roald Dahl. I loved the book Matilda, and Matilda the movie too, but we stopped reading The BFG after about three chapters because it was so dull. The Disney movie of The BFG was a dud too.
But, evidently September is Roald Dahl Month. Who knew? In an effort to be a more fun* homeschool mom, I read my kids Dahl’s Television poem, for probably the fourth time.
*You’ll see this is a joke when you read the poem.
I cry at everything from Little Women to Pampers commercials, so it’s no surprise that I can’t read this poem aloud and not cry. Are you crying, Mom? Seriously?? Nobody even died in that poem. If you’re a cryer too, maybe read the poem aloud to yourself in your bathroom before you read it to your kiddos.
