This apple pie simmer pot recipe will fill your home with the comforting fragrance of a homemade apple pie, hot and fresh out of the oven. Strangely enough, there are no apples in the recipe!
When I was a kid, my mom always kept a small pot simmering on the stove top filled with water and cinnamon. (I stole her vintage Corningware pots for the sake of nostalgia!)
I haven’t used candles, Scentsy, chemical fragrances, or potpourri* in our home for years…honestly, I’m getting sick of learning more every day about how every single thing we use is slowly killing us.
*is anyone old enough to remember when every home had a crock of potpourri on the toilet?
I’m not a huge fan of essential oils, either—except they do seem to keep people from reaching for the Nyquil, Halls, etc. when they have a cold—so unless I want my house to smell like…nothing. No scent=nothing. Or, my house smells like the last thing I cooked. Sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes not!

You probably have everything you need to make this simmer pot in your pantry; you’ll notice in the photo I use organic almond extract, but that’s just because it’s what I have on hand. You can get a giant bottle of real almond extract on Amazon for less than half the price per ounce of the little bottles at the grocery store.
Cinnamon sticks and nutmeg are super cheap in Winco’s bulk section; if you don’t have cinnamon sticks, obviously, you can use ground cinnamon.
Apple Pie Simmer Pot Recipe
- Cinnamon sticks
- Nutmeg
- Almond extract (not to be confused with almond oil or almond essential oil)
- Vegetable oil
- Water
Just dump some of everything in a small pot, fill with water, and simmer away. If you’re like me and you tend to forget to replenish the water every now and then, use a small crock pot like this one!
The vegetable oil seems to make the scent stronger for some reason, and it also helps to make the pot easier to clean. The oil doesn’t affect the fragrance at all, so if all you have is super expensive olive oil, don’t waste it!
This Apple Pie Simmer Pot recipe is a natural way to fill your home with the delicious fragrance of homemade apple pie!
