Every kid should know his times tables cold by the end of 3rd grade. My kids learn up to 12 x 12 because I’m old school like that. I also make my kids eat their vegetables and send them to bed at 9pm sharp.

I am a huge believer in making kids learn certain things by rote. There are some things you just need to know like the back of your hand to function as an educated adult. It’s not difficult for kids to memorize the multiplication table, it just takes practice, and practice is more fun if the worksheets are decorated with favorite movie characters. So says my sample of two, both of whom flat out refuse to fill out plain worksheets. But copy and paste a Ninja Turtle on a fractions worksheet and they can’t get enough.
Decoration, Repetition, Competition is my memory work motto.
- Decoration: If it looks like fun, it probably is.
- Repetition: The best way to memorize anything is repeated exposure.
- Competition: A kid will work harder and faster if he’s trying to beat his own best time…or his sister.
Free Printable Star Wars: The Force Awakens Math Worksheets: BB-8 Multiplication Table
The free printable Star Wars math worksheets include a blank BB-8 multiplication table and a guide. Page 1 is a blank multiplication table featuring lovable BB-8, and Page 2 is a completed multiplication table kids can use as a guide (and you can use as a cheat sheet if your silly school didn’t make you learn your times tables!)
I let my kids use the guide as long as they wanted to; they quickly discovered that it took way longer to go back and forth copying the guide onto the worksheet than to just memorize their times tables!
My kids always complained about having to fill in the 1s row because duh, Mom.
So I removed the 1s row! If your kids regularly fill out blank multiplication tables, it may take a couple passes before they get used to not filling in the 1s.
