It’s Halloween time and I’m exploring 31 Great Books to Read to Your Kids—what better author to share with your kids than Edgar Allan Poe, the master of suspense?
Homeschooling post updated 10/29/2023
Reading a well written suspenseful tale—even one that includes murders—is nothing like watching a gory scene on TV or acting one out on a video game. My kids can’t play violent video games or watch scary movies, but they can read Edgar Allan Poe til their eyes bleed with my blessing.
As violent acts are perpetrated by children and young adults with shocking regularity, a simple question begs answering: where were these kids’ mothers?
How to Raise Connected Kids in a Violent Society
- Get the TVs and tablets and phones and computers out of your kids’ rooms: screens cancel human connection.
- Don’t expose your kids to screen violence—it numbs the soul.
- Make sure your kids are adult oriented instead of peer oriented—peer pressure and bullying roll off kids’ shoulders like water off a duck’s back when they know there is life beyond the peer group. Read Hold On to Your Kids.
Most of the Great Books in this series are novels; Poe did write one novel but he’s famous for the poem The Raven and his tightly woven short stories like:
- The Telltale Heart
- The Fall of the House of Usher
- The Pit and the Pendulum
- The Black Cat
Spend a day (if you homeschool) or a week (if you read to your kids before or after school) reading Poe to your kids to kick off the Halloween season!
