How much money do I save? $85 a year!
I was using two 15 oz cans of Muir Glen organic tomato sauce each week. I had a Doh! moment one day when I was grocery shopping and realized that tomato sauce is just watered down tomato paste. I was paying the good folks at Muir Glen for a product that is more than half water!
I added 9 oz water and 1/2 tsp salt to a can of organic tomato paste and created* Cheaper Organic Tomato Sauce!
*I hesitate to call this a recipe because it’s dead easy, but there’s a printable recipe card at the end of this post because it’s nice to have the proportions on hand.
Now I buy the 12 pack of organic tomato paste at Costco for $6.72 — $0.56 per 6 oz can.
My savings show that you can save a lot of money on your grocery bill — even if you already buy organic!

- One 6 oz can tomato paste (organic)
- 9 oz water
- 1/2 tsp salt
- Open and remove both ends of the tomato paste can.
- Use one can end to push the tomato paste through the can into a 2-cup bowl.
- Stir in water, a little at a time, until smooth.
- Stir in salt.
