Notes for Perfect Steak Seasoning:
You need a good coffee grinder to make this recipe. I have a vintage Braun coffee grinder from the 1980s, but it looks like the Mueller coffee grinder has the same 150 watts motor as the original Braun coffee grinder.
My son created this recipe after I bought a bottle of Montreal steak seasoning on sale and he used it up in one day. Even on sale, Montreal steak seasoning costs $0.69 per ounce, so it wasn’t likely I’d buy another bottle. My son reverse engineered a perfect copycat Montreal steak seasoning using the listed ingredients and taste. Thanks to the Winco bulk spice bins, he was able to recreate the Montreal steak seasoning for a fraction of the price, so we can use it liberally on all the meats.
I whir the spices in the coffee grinder until the mix is baby powder-fine. This ensures perfect flavor with every bite, with no hard chunks.
Still, there is a place for a chunky steak seasoning, so you can also make the traditional Montreal steak seasoning copycat recipe if you simply pulse the spices until they are uniformly chunky.
The cheapest way to make this Montreal steak seasoning copycat is to buy bulk spices from Winco. If you don’t have a Winco nearby, here are the ingredients at the best price I could find on Amazon (all items ship free with Amazon Prime):
- Skip the work and just buy bulk Montreal Steak Seasoning already made. $0.59 per ounce.
- Coarse Himalayan Pink Salt $0.16 per ounce.
- Sauer’s Whole Black Peppercorn 1 lb $0.34 per ounce. This is the only item that is cheaper on Amazon than at Winco.
- Dry, minced garlic $0.31 per ounce. This link is to 5 pounds of minced garlic, but I also use the coffee grinder to grind my own garlic powder and garlic salt (equal parts minced garlic and salt) so there aren’t any added ingredients.
- Dry, minced onion $0.46 per ounce.
- Crushed red pepper $0.39 per ounce. This is a great price for a normal amount (12 oz), because crushed red pepper loses its spiciness quickly. If you want to add spice using crushed red pepper, your best bet is to use the pizza packets they give out free when you buy pizza. Each packet contains half a teaspoon of crushed red pepper, and the airtight packaging means it’s always spicy. And it’s free…except for the $30 pizza you bought when you could have made a better pizza at home for $5.
I make at least four batches of the copycat Montreal Steak Seasoning at a time, since I have all the spices pulled out, and we eat a lot of meat. Each batch fits perfectly into the coffee grinder, so you will have to repeat the recipe four times to get a four-times batch.
I just funnel or dump the batch into a container—if you save the sprinkle-top container from a spice jar, you can keep some of the Perfect Steak Seasoning in that for easy sprinkling. I usually just dump four batches into a 16-oz deli container that I get at Winco for less than two cents, here is how I get cheap reusable deli containers from Winco for 1.3 cents:
To get cheap, reusable, 16-oz deli containers with lid at Winco, just fill the container with the cheapest item (this is iodized salt at 44 cents per pound), and check out. You get the salt, and a practically free container. Each 16-oz deli container with lid weighs half an ounce.
I use the Winco deli containers for most of my spices and spice blends, since I go through far more spices each month than a little 2-oz spice bottle can handle.
This is the perfect all-purpose steak seasoning for all meats.
Use 1 Tbsp of the recipe per 1 lb of meat. That equates to a little more than 1 tsp salt per pound of meat.
This Perfect Steak Seasoning is even better than the classic Montreal Steak Seasoning copycat, and a great way to MAKE IT CHEAPER. One minute of effort, a lifetime of savings.
